about

This recording of the Garage Jazz Architects is the first official public performance with the new trio line up featuring Mark Halverson on drums. Mark joined the group in the fall of 2009 after playing a few shows with Instagon and being asked by Lob and Chad if he would be interested in this project. After only a few rehearsals (some of which can be heard on the GJA MYSPACE page) they decided it was time to start playing out.

This session happened on a cold and rainy night in Davis, CA. for the Thursday Night Live Jazz series at John Natsoulas Gallery. The gallery is a big room with a lot of natural echo, so keeping the volume to a point that did not get too blown out was a chore, but in the end the results were very pleasant.

The collection of songs were mostly themes from TV shows. This is something that the GJA are sorta playing with as a focus at this time. There are also songs from the past (Butter), a jazz standard (So What), and an Instagon standard (Jazz for Satan). The show was a good time and success, and this recording shows a great example of Garage Jazz and its conceptual possibilities.
